Makeup and I...Why I Don't Wear It

Salaam alaikum wa rahmat Allah wa barakatuh everyone,

Insh'Allah this post finds you in the best of health and the highest of iman! So, yay, I finally have something semi-interesting to blog about :P

So...makeup...my personal thoughts. Honestly, I've never been a fan of it. I used to be a ballet dancer (I took lessons for 10 years!), and was on stage quite a bit, so I used to have to wear heavy stage makeup on a semi-regular basis. Perhaps this is why I don't like makeup so much...because let's face it, stage makeup feels icky on your face, and is actually REALLY scary when you're not on stage because it's so heavy. However, even when my friends would give me "makeovers" at sleepovers with much more normal makeup, I'd always end up washing my face off after 15 minutes.

Makeup is just not ME. It doesn't make me feel more beautiful or confident. In fact, it makes me feel like I'm hiding behind something. When I look at myself in the mirror when I have makeup on, the face staring back at me isn't my own. I've gotten a lot of remarks over the years about, "oh, if you actually had someone do your makeup correctly for you, or if you just put on a little foundation and lip gloss with some light eyeliner you'd LOVE it" or "you just don't like it because no one's done it for you correctly." I've tried that. I've had my makeup done for me countless times, even a couple times by professionals, and I STILL never like it. I just don't like makeup. Quite frankly, I think I look better without it on (my dad and my husband both agree on this, actually...alhamdolillah I'm very blessed to have men in my life who appreciate the face that Allah gave me).

So yeah, that is why I don't wear makeup...even at home around my husband. It also has to do with modesty, but I think that'll be another post for another day...

What are your personal views on makeup? Why do you like to wear it/not wear it?

  1. Mashallah, sis :) I enjoy makeup like eyeliner or lipsticks once in a while, but I do have to admit if my skin was better, I would probably never wear foundation again :p

  2. hey ayah, ive been following your blog for some time, only recently made a new account. hello again :) but makeup, can i say eeeck?? hehe i've never been big on makeup either; there's always been something slightly artificial about wearing it. and on top of the fact that my husband doesn't really like for me to wear it, it doesn't make me comfortable. maybe on special occassions. but normally when i am going to work or a meeting of some kind, i put some powder to help my complexion and that's it!! not even blush or eyeshadow! but i do want to say, at least when we are home, my husband does enjoy the kohl black around the eyes lol.

    1. Salaam Hiba! Thank you for your input! I'm glad I'm not the only lady out there who isn't overly fond of makeup :)

  3. Salam sister, I don't wear make-up myself and not because I don't like it (I find it takes too much time and effort!)but because it's a kind of tabbaruj and thus not allowed for Muslim women.. Of course we are encouraged to look beautiful for our husbands (only). What I'm saying is...even if we like to do something, but if it is not allowed in Islam, then we are to avoid it. Alhamdulillah if you don't like to do it but there may be some sisters who may love it but avoid it anyway due to their iman, and insyAllah Allah rewards them for their choice..just a thought :)

    1. Wa alaikum salaam Umm Khalid,

You are completely right...I didn't really want to get too much into the Islamic perspective on makeup, just my personal feelings on it. However, I completely agree that it is a form of tabbaruj (adornment/beautification) and thus is not appropriate to wear around non-mahrams. Of course I have it easy because I'm already not a fan, but may Allah(swt) reward the sisters who are fond of makeup, yet refrain from wearing it around non-mahrams to please their Lord. While makeup isn't something I personally struggle with, there are a lot of other things that I do. What might come easily for one sister may be a struggle for another sister. May Allah(swt) reward everyone who leaves something/sacrifices for His sake, ameen!

  4. wow mashaAllah i really love you for writing this post because you are the first person i've found who feels this way. i'm not going to lie, i throw on eyeliner or lip color once in a while. but i hate the idea of making makeup part of my daily routine. Allah created women beautiful in their natural state. i feel like makeup was created to make women feel aware of their flaws. they feel insecure without it. and that's not even to mention how wearing too much makeup seems like a contradiction to modest dressing. but im no scholar. just an opinion :)
